Sherlock Holmes Party Details:

This is what Emily said about planning/styling the party- “I am the Volunteer Coordinator for a large public library system. I also have a small party-planning business, Smarty Parties. Once a year, both of my jobs collide, and I get to plan a party for our wonderful volunteers!

We try to use book themes for our parties–after all, we are a library. To my delight, this year’s volunteer celebration had a Sherlock Holmes theme. The BBC’s Sherlock series is returning to television in January (1/19 on PBS in the states), and many of these elements would be great for a viewing party as well. I was inspired by the classic stories of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as modern versions such as Elementary, Sherlock, and the Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey, Jr.

For the dessert table, I chose a quote from A Study in Scarlet. I flanked the dessert table with two plastic street lamps filled it with Sherlock-esque items: a vintage typewriter, a violin, and an old ammunition chest. Desserts included:

A Study in Scarlet red velvet cupcakes
Elementary, My Dear Waffles (waffle cookies)
Licorice Pipes
Sherlock Cake Pops
Fingerprint Cookies

Beyond the dessert table, we decorated the guests’ tables with more Sherlock-inspired artifacts: chemistry lab ware, candlesticks, skulls, and of course, magnifying glasses and pipes. I made giant magnifying glasses to hang above the tables by attaching embroidery hoops to wooden dowels. I bought 12 yards of inexpensive brown plaid cotton and cut it into suiting-inspired table runners for the guests tables (it’s also the background of the Sherlock silhouette on the dessert table).

For entertainment, the staff staged a murder mystery interspersed within the presentation of volunteer awards. The volunteers and guests laughed at the performance and enjoyed the surprise. Each volunteer was given a personalized detective notebook as a favor to keep.”
