Old Skool Hip Hop Birthday Party

This party is off the chain, yo! Always on the lookout for novel party ideas, I thought this one was certainly unique! Do you remember the graffiti Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles party a few weeks ago? The backdrop from this party could rival the one there! Take a look around and see the unique party ideas found here…..

The party ideas and elements that I am going nuts over from this awesome first birthday bash include:

  • Amazing graffiti dessert table backdrop
  • Graffiti cake trio
  • Stacked crates and faux Pioneer amps
  • Vinyl-inspired sugar cookies
  • Boom box gable boxes
  • Colored pencil and marker containers from old cassette tapes
  • And an awesome telephone pole decor piece

Cake inspired by Sweet and Saucy Shop’s Geo Party Cake.

Old Skool Hip Hop Party Details:

This is what Christine said about planning the party-

“INSPIRATION BEHIND THEME:
Having two kids now, my weekends are usually spent going on play dates and/or attending kids’ birthday parties. I’ve seen them all: Thomas the Train, Cars, Airplanes, Star Wars, etc. You name it, I’ve seen it. So when I began brainstorming with my mama-friends who love party planning as much as I do, I was utterly dreading coming up with a theme that was original. That is, until one of them mentioned kicking it back to the Old Skool and doing a tribute to Old Skool Hip Hop. Most people would’ve rolled their eyes and thought my friend was crazy, but being that my husband is a huge fan of Biggie Smalls (like, he can rap along to every one of his songs) I just couldn’t pass up on the best idea ever! The biggest motivation behind going along with this theme was for the parents. Let’s be honest, babies never remember their first birthday. This will probably be one of the last birthday themes that I will get to pick for him until he starts having specific requests like Cars, Airplanes, Trains (roll my eyes) so might as well make his first one that everyone can enjoy! And as you can see from my pictures, there were definitely some adults that enjoyed it more than the kids!

HEAD TABLE:
As much as I wanted to stay true to the Old Skool vibe, I also wanted it to be simple, clean and modern. The first idea that popped into my head was a graffiti backdrop. This was the focal point and the foundation of my inspiration. It is from this backdrop that everything else was born. I originally wanted it to be on a smaller scale so that I could wrap it up in a frame and hang it up in his room after the party, but the muralist that I hired made it a tad bit bigger (ok, a WHOLE lot bigger) than I asked for and I’m SO glad he did! This was definitely a statement piece and commanded the attention of everyone that entered.

I wanted to keep the desserts super clean and modern. I wanted it to capture peoples’ attentions without taking away from the backdrop. Cindy from Sweetleemade executed this perfectly with a cake trio. She kept it simple with a paint splatter effect and a geometric cake topper. She also made vinyl shaped sugar cookies with the birthday boy’s name cut out. And her gold splattered macarons were to die for!

Originally, I wanted to set up a photo opp area outside where guests would be able to take pictures (as it was highly encouraged to dress up in hip hop attire) but because of the hot weather I nixed the idea and used the props to beef up my head table décor. Sometimes these last minute changes can end up being the best thing to happen to your set up! The crates and faux speakers were the perfect last minute additions to the head table décor.

PARTY FAVORS:
For party favors, I saw the cutest idea on Pinterest where a crafty mama turned boring favor boxes into stereos! I did the same, but I filled it with accessories for kids to wear at the party: a plastic yellow chain necklace (chains bought and cut from Home Depot), a bandana, Ring Pop, sunglasses and a “graffiti” crayon. My husband contributed to the party planning by making a mixed CD of all of our favorite Old Skool Jams and boy were they a hit! I really wanted this party to cater to the adults as much as the kiddos. So many times we are dragged to these parties, might as well make it fun for everyone!

KID’S ACTIVITY TABLE:
I also set out coloring/activity sheets with color pencils and markers for parents to take back to their tables to keep kids occupied. I DIY’d the pencil and marker holders by gluing 4 cassette tapes together. Super easy! What was more exciting was that I was also able to find a hip hop coloring book. There were Biggie and Tupac coloring pages as well as word searches and mazes. This was a hit with the adults!

GUEST SIGN IN TABLE:
I bought a slab of vinyl brick flooring from Home Depot and had them cut it into 3 pieces. I used these as back drops for the guest sign in table as well as the party favor table. I also bought a large dowel and had them cut it in half to make telephone polls. After I nailed down a couple of rods and a planks for the base I stained it and added thumb tacks and yarn for the wire. I was able to find the book “How the Beat was Born” for guests to sign. I wanted something my baby could keep and read even later!

GUEST TABLES:
I kept the guest tables simple. I Just put the menus in IKEA frames and called it a day. The cool graphics were eye-catching enough for people to be entertained by.”
