“My daughter Gianah has a thing for horses and what, almost 5 year old, doesn’t?! She had a few requirements: ponies, the colors blue, pink, peach and cowgirl/boy hats. With her birthday in May I planned and designed for an outdoor party… complete with a wagon wheel ribbon chandelier, a gorgeous horse collar adorned with flowers worthy of a Kentucky Derby winner and lots and lots of bales of straw. Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn’t cooperate and with an hour prior to the party, we had to set up inside. Luckily, she gave in and we were able to get outdoors and take advantage of the horse cart rides and petting/grooming area that Daydream Acres had set up in our backyard.
I loved planning this party and used a lot of horse tack to help decorate. The ribbon chandelier was made out of an old wagon wheel from the late 1890’s. I tied ribbon in a variety of colors, textures and lengths- it made a strong visual impact. We had bandana “banners” tied end to end; this was an inexpensive way to bring color to the outdoors. We took the standard cowboy hats (worn by every guest…I wondered if they would even care to wear them) and glued a pink or blue sheriff star and rope detail. I used gorgeous pink and peach roses with babys breath, hosta leaves and some wildflowers from the yard in our mason jar and milk glass arrangements. The girls helped make our party favor bags using a standard small gift bag with a kraft paper doily and ribbon.
The cake was a real show stopper, positioned on a sweet white shabby chic table dressed with a twine and doily garland. The real highlight was the barn board sign made out of rope and horseshoes spelling “Gianah.”
Finally, we had prepared for some outdoor games but had to forgo a couple of them. The ring toss game was one we played indoors and it was fun to make (6 Angry Orchards had to be consumed… the sacrifices a mother must make…).
The kids truly enjoyed the horse rides; laughing was heard all around. The rain didn’t stand in the way of my sweet 5 year old’s fabulous and special day, and I learned flexibility and party planning go hand in hand”!
