Moana Inspired Birthday Luau
Moana Inspired Birthday Luau Details:
This is what Kristen shared about styling the party-
“I always plan my daughters’ birthdays about a year in advance because as a wedding florist and party planner, they are usually the funnest events I get to do all year. This year’s Moana Birthday Luau for Aria (turning 6) and Vivian (turning 3) was no exception. All of my daughters love the Moana movie, to the point where we’ve watched it probably 200+ times at this point and my middle daughter sings a Moana song literally every single day. Needless to say, it seemed like the perfect birthday theme for this year’s party!
I designed an invitation for the party by doing some watercolor illustrations of my daughters in Moana art-style. I added Hei Hei, Pua, and Stitch (because why not?!) to the design along with an island inspired by Motunui in the background.
Several months before the party, I got the really awesome (albeit ambitious) idea to turn our staircase into Te Fiti (the green goddess island mountain at the end of the movie). I decided a lot of green balloons and some tropical leaves and flowers would do the trick. I ended up using some faux garlands and tissue paper flowers as well to add more texture. It turned out AWESOME. Te Fiti was the first thing everyone saw when they walked in to the party.
After passing Te Fiti, the guests then saw the awesome sweets table with balloon display over it. The table was covered in yummy desserts, including many Moana-inspired ones.
Tropical floral arrangements accented tables indoors and out and bright balloons and tablecloths dressed the outdoor tent seating. An island-themed bouncy house with slides, a sandbox filled with Tamatoa’s gold and treasures graced the party. Also, kiddie pools/water activities entertained guests outside while a bunch of Moana-themed food, drinks, favors and candies awaited them indoors.
Delicious Food and Drink
Kabobs, Hawaiian-style pork, grilled pineapple and veggies, hotdogs and brats were served along with macaroni salad, pina colada salad, fruit ‘spears’, and spinach artichoke dip. There were tons of other kid-friendly snacks options as well. Beverages included Hawaiian Punch, a yummy Pineapple-Orange beverage just for adults and an assortment of pop, beer, fruity drinks, juice boxes and La Croix filled the coolers.
The desserts table was decked out with a beautiful watercolor-inspired cake with tropical flowers, Moana-like cupcakes with sails, Jell-o Ocean cups with wafer rafts and sails, Nilla wafer oysters, “seaweed” on sticks, coconut and sprinkle donuts, key lime pie, banana cream pie, tropical fish candies, tropical Jelly Belly’s, octopus gummies, shark gummies, Jolly Ranchers and tropical Starburst. Above the dessert table I created letters for balloons that spelled out “Aria” and “Vivian” to honor the birthday girls which sat under a large blue balloon ‘wave’. It was awesome!
The festivities came to a close after we broke the giant Kakamora pinata I had made using a large balloon, paper mache, glue and lots of tissue paper (and lots of labor!!!). When it finally broke open (it was stronger than I thought!) 7lbs of candy and prizes poured out of it! The kids went nuts trying to collect it all!
My girls had the best time with all of their friends and family at the party. Everyone told us how it was such a fun time for both children and adults so I would say it was a huge success! I cannot wait to start planning next year’s birthday!”
