Pastel New York City Birthday Party
This is what Juliette shared about the party:
“New York holds a special place in our hearts us since it was where we lived when we learned we were pregnant with our first child, Alina. After living in California for 10 years, imagine how excited we were when Alina asked for a New York City themed party for her 10th birthday! From the few times that our family has visited New York City, Alina has fallen in love with every aspect of it. It was as if her soul immediately recognized the significance of the city.
Decor + Design:
In designing this party, we had to incorporate some quintessentially New York elements such as the city skyline, the Statue of Liberty, yellow taxi cabs, and the Brooklyn Bridge. The pastel color palette for the party came together after we started the design of our cake made by Mijji Song from Mijji Cakes. Instead of fondant, we decided to use buttercream for the decorations on the cake to give it more of an organic and softer feel. The cupcakes, also made by Mijji, were the perfect canvas to incorporate the iconic “I love NY” phrase!
For the decorations on the dessert and guest tables, we wanted to make everything come alive with different scenes of New York. That’s when we enlisted our illustrator Sachi Chen, of Ugly Sweater Portraits, who painted the scenes in watercolor. It took her over 14 hours to complete everything but all the little details added so much magic to the tables!
Party Activities + Favors:
For a structured party activity, we hired Ainsley Cheng (from Sweet Lovyn Creates) to teach the guests hand-lettering or calligraphy. Each girl got to take home a calligraphy set, her own personalized notebook, a personalized bookmark, and the masterpiece they created during the lesson.
Instead of gifts, we opted for a book exchange, which also doubled as another structured activity. Guests who brought a wrapped book could take another book home in exchange for the one they brought in. The girls had fun unwrapping their books and it was a perfect way to wind down the party.
Everyone had a blast and we would throw this party again in a New York minute! Well, a socially-distanced one of course. :)”
