Preppy Party Details:This is what Jaime said about designing/styling the party
– “I am an event planner in Los Angeles and when it came time to celebrate my daughters first birthday I was very excited to start the planning process. I just may have had it all planned it my head since before she was born. Just maybe.
I come from a large, loud, loving Italian family. And more than anything else in life I want my daughter to understand family and what it means to put family first. I really wanted her to have a first birthday that reminded me of my big crazy birthdays growing up. They were always at my home with tons of family squeezed into the house, and there was always pasta involved. Lots of pasta. That was pretty much it. And that was all I really wanted.
When it came time to plan Madisons birthday, I wanted much of the same. However, being the designer that I am, I of course had to make it pretty as well! I didnt want something super girly but I also wanted it to reflect her personality. When I was deciding how to decorate her nursery navy blue and pink was one of my top choices. Since we ended up with a black and white nursery I thought I would do her party in my second favorite, navy blue and pink. Those colors are also super preppy so I thought the color scheme would show off her east coast preppy roots. Youll see that I used lots of stripes, patterns, and polka-dots to bring in the preppy-ness.
Being from the east coast means that we dont have a lot of family around for parties like this, (even though grandma flew in to help) so we invited tons and tons of friends to celebrate with us. All 80 of them in our not so big (but very lovely) home! I was determined that Madison was going to feel the love of thousands!!
Deciding on the menu was easy . pasta and meatballs of course! Keeping with our Italian roots and the tradition of how I grew up celebrating birthdays, my husband and I decided to make the entire meal ourselves for all 80 guests. Yikes! It was crazy, but we pulled it off and my husbands meatballs were incredible! Adding to the fun, we hired a mixologist Romega Catering to serve up some delicious cocktails to be sure the adults would have a good time as well.
Much of the party was DIY which I dont often recommend to a working mom who asks me for planning advice, but thankfully I have awesome friends who helped me out. I personally styled the dessert table and all of the décor throughout the house, including the yard. I ordered all of the signage on Minted and with the help of a friend, most of the desserts were all home made. The beautiful blue and white striped cake was from Aunt Joys Cake in Burbank, and it was to die for; but the smash cake was made by yours truly. I really wanted to be the one who baked my daughters first bite of cake, so I did it myself! My dear friend who is a kindergarten teacher helped me set up the most perfect play area for all the kids coming ranging in age from 1 to 8 years old. Rentals and linens were from my talented friend Jen at Dress MY Party and the balloons were from Party Divine. Madison s gorgeous pink dress was courtesy of her grandmother from a beautiful shop in Spring Lake, NJ, Teddy Beas by the Seashore. Most of the other décor was made by me or purchased on Etsy. Last, but certainly not least, I am lucky enough to call the amazingly talented photographer, Sarah Rico, my friend. Not only did she perfectly capture the details of the party but she somehow managed to get beautiful shots of my 1 year old who doesnt sit still for more than an eighth of a second! A real talent in itself! I will seriously cherish these pictures forever!
Some people say that an extravagant 1st birthday bash is excessive but I just wanted to do something that this little family with a lot of love would remember forever. I want Madison to be giddy with excitement every year when her birthday approaches and I want her to know she is always surrounded by tons of happiness and love”.
