“It was a double celebration – Leonidas’ first birthday and christening day. My clients had chosen a beautiful outdoor country venue, and was a perfect way to spend a Sunday – away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There was ample space for the children to explore, and one of the requests of Leo’s dad , Dino was to have many activities for the children to enjoy their day. Oh boy – there was a puppet show, go cart rides , jumping castles , pony rides and Leo’s favourite a visit from Barney & friends .
Leo’s parents decided that they would christen him at the chapel at the venue, so we had the opportunity to transform the venue into a modern vintage wonderland. From the time guests arrived there were many unique touches … everything from a welcome lemonade stand to an entertaining juggler on stilts.
After our first meeting, Leo’s mom, Dominique had the vision to transform the venue into a space where it felt as though you were sitting in the clouds. She wanted a modern vintage theme .Duck egg blue, smudgy greens, creames, whites and the earthiness of burlap were the chosen colours.
Now it was down to business – making our vision a reality. From the ceiling we hung hand made fluffy clouds, paper lattice hot air balloons and cardboard vintage planes all at different lengths.
To compliment the aerial work – the tablescape was kept simple – we used duck egg blue linen and burlap runners to bring In earthy tones. We also added a beautiful modern touch with Napoleon crystal chairs. As this celebration was for a little boy, the flowers were neutral – We chose lovely baskets of white and green hydrangeas, bunches of white roses and single stemmed peonies which were arranged on the table.
The sweet bar was jam-packed with lovely treats for both the kids and adults. There was everything from flavoured and coloured Jordan almonds, and Macaroons to cupcakes and adorable cloud and hot air balloon biscuits on sticks. But, taking centre stage was a beautiful three-tier birthday cake. Custom made theme labels, cupcake flags and cute little sayings were used to add a quirky touch.
Another feature was the “post me a wish” table, where guests were able to write a wish to young Leonidas on custom made post cards. The vintage typewriter and red post box added to the vintage ambience.
What better idea for a hot summers day, than a Lemonade stand to keep the guests refreshed. Upon arrival , guests were offered homemade lemonade, in the sweetest little bottles, again with personalized stickers as well as fresh fruit to snack on in little brown bags with lace trimmings.
In the Greek Orthodox christening ceremony, a font is used. As the ceremony was at the venues’ chapel, we brought in the font from the church. It was decorated with a beautiful soft babies breathe garland which complimented the huge baskets of babies breath that were placed in front of the altar.
Another customary Greek tradition at a christening is to give all guests who were present at the ceremony witness pins (Martyrika). We had sourced these exquisite hand sewn witness pins from Greece. Some pins were shaped like hot air balloons and and others had embroidered hot air balloons on them … Such a lovely keep sake.
For the childrens’ favour we hung a lovely hand-sewn hot air balloon mobile from a white twig tree.
Before guests were directed to the restaurant we had set up a seating chart display. To add to the the theme we used lovely vintage suitcases, arranged with babies breathe, and placed the seating chart inside. Lovely big baskets with bunches of balloons, vintage lanterns, and wooden planes created a fun-filled scene for guests to find their names”.
